Utah State House still allows school beatings

According to a Salt Lake Tribune article "Weird Laws Clutter the Utah Code" Utah parents can give written permission to teachers to hit their children even though none of Utah's public school do it. (Dan Harrie and Judy Fahys, January 18, 1998).

The law was passed in 1992 and says:
"A school employee may not inflict or cause the infliction of corporal punishment upon a child who is receiving services from the school, unless written permission has been given by the student's parent or guardian to do so."

Report from the Social Action commitee

We met last night to revise our issues - our current issues are on the left under the "categories" heading. Linda Hilton from CORC was so inspiring, we thought that it was time to do it.

After a voting on over 20 ideas, we arrived with the following three categories:

I'm mad that more people DONT VOTE!

I'm mad about the wage gap and inequality!

I'm mad about the polarization in our country!

Definition of "Evangelical"

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The word evangelicalism usually refers to a tendency in diverse branches of conservative Christianity, typified by an emphasis on evangelism, a personal experience of conversion, biblically-oriented faith, and a belief in the relevance of Christian faith to cultural issues. In the late 20th century and early 21st century, Protestant people, churches and social movements have often been called evangelical in contrast to Protestant liberalism.

Darfur Lecture at the JCC tonight

I attended a lecture tonight sponsored by the National Council of Jewish Women, Utah Chapter. The speaker was
Ruth Messinger, who is the current president and executive director of American Jewish World Service. She talked about her efforts to establish humanitarian aid and interfaith relief services for communities who have been impacted by the genocide in Darfur.

The speech was especially moving to some of the audience members who have been affected in their own past from the Nazi Holoucast. A refrain heard often in our culture is "never again", however, Genocide is happening in this time, right now, and not much is being done through our government to assist those who are being murdered in Darfur.

HB393; "Morals" Trump Facts

Enraged, Sad, Despairing; I can't decide which emotion is primary for me after reading “Panel Oks bill on Gay Clubs” in the Tribune this morning. Incidently, the headline also misrepresented the Gay/Straight Alliance as a “Gay” club The article described the House Education Committee's supporting 8-4 vote on HB393, which prohibits Gay/Straight Alliance Clubs on campus. Chris Buttars is quoted at the end of the article as being opposed to the clubs because "it goes against MY morals".

Darfur

National Call-In Day for Darfur
This may be late, but we can still make the calls this week. Sheryl

Tuesday, Dec. 6, 2005

After the success of our last National Call-In Day for Darfur, we hope that you will join us in picking up the phone once again this Tuesday, December 6.

Experts from the State Department, NATO, and leading think-tanks have repeatedly said that funding the African Union is absolutely critical to stopping what both the President and Congress have declared to be genocide. Unfortunately, $50 million intended for African Union troops in Darfur was cut out of the recent Foreign Operations spending bill. There is, however, one last chance to get that funding back before the end of the year. An effort is underway to include those funds in the Defense Appropriations Conference Report when Congress comes back into session next week. It is vital that we do everything we can to make sure that Congress knows that their constituents are paying attention to this bill, and that we expect them to include these funds. Please call your Representative and your two Senators and make your voice heard on this incredibly important issue.
