The Blue Army needs more SLCo Dems

From Weston Clark of the Salt Lake County Democratic Party:

In our last newsletter I introduced the Blue Army. It is up and going, and many members are enjoying a dialogue with other Democrats and learning what candidates need our help now. They are, unfortunately, learning about one of the biggest mysteries of politics.

Nobody cares until November.

Even though this email goes out to over 4000 people, only 40 brave souls have signed up to help Democrats get elected.

Candidates are desperate for help. They need volunteers. They NEED YOU! But nobody seems to give politics a thought until it is so close to the election that it is essentially TOO LATE!

Yes, I said it. Too late! The only way that last week of work is effective is

Anyone want to do this with me? Bake Sale

Dear MoveOn member,
Winning the White House is going to take a lot of dough. So on Saturday, June 21st and Sunday, June 22nd, we're organizing "Hungry for Change"—the largest bake sale in history—to fund a massive campaign to send Barack Obama to the Oval Office. Every extra cookie and brownie we sell means more organizers on the ground, more creative ads, and more Obama voters at the polls on Election Day. Can you help?

To the State Party; Unity can be ours...

It has been one and a half weeks since the State Democratic Convention.

Most of the hurt feelings and confusion about the “line out” process and election results have become less painful, with most people moving towards working for specific local and national candidates.

I read a letter to the editor in the Salt Lake Tribune a few days ago. It was written by a 19 year old man who had driven up to the State Convention in Salt Lake City, to participate in his own bid for National Delegate, and to participate in the State Convention itself. He was discouraged on many levels. He voiced some of the feelings that I am sure other participants felt after the State Convention was over.

MoveOn Calling for Obama Party a success!

I hosted a MoveOn calling party for Senator Obama tonight. The calls were to Texas, where many of the voters did not realize the voting process rules..vote in primary then to a cacus.
Very positive experience; networked with many of the attendees to work on local elections!
Met some great people who "have never done this before!"

This party supports the idea that Senator Obama is truly encouraging a grass roots movement; it is really working.

D4U Endorses Obama

Democracy for Utah, a local grassroots group affiliated with Democracy for America, is endorsing Barack Obama for the Democratic nomination in the 2008 presidential election.

We've been following the caucuses and primaries, from Iowa to South Carolina, listening to the debates and carefully considering what each candidate brings to the Democratic ticket. Based on our observations, and in keeping with the principles of Democracy for Utah, the D4U Steering Committee unanimously supports Senator Obama.

Mitt Loves Hillary (NOT)

I got a mailer yesterday from Mitt Romney's campaign with "HILLARY FOR COMMANDER IN CHIEF??"on the envelope.

I opened it up...and found a questionnaire of one's feelings and opinions about HILLARY CLINTON'S ABILITY TO PROTECT OUR COUNTRY AS COMMANDER IN CHIEF".
Of course I answered the "push poll" with opposite answers that the Karl Rove like campaign presented.

I think I'll donate $5.00 so I can continue to get their hate mail. In fact, as much as I adore Obama, I may work for Hillary now.

Ralph Becker got involved because he cared

Salt Lake Tribune:

A youthful 55-year-old, Becker runs rivers, backpacks, bikes City Creek Canyon and skis the backcountry. He first hit Salt Lake City in 1974 to tackle an environmental law degree. During three decades he would work as an attorney, open an urban-planning firm and, later, serve as House minority leader.

Now, the soft-spoken Democrat, who spent eight years on the city's Planning Commission, has his sights on the mayor's seat to guide what he repeatedly calls a "great American city." [...]

Becker had no desire for public office until he got involved with the Greater Avenues Community Council after the floods of 1983. There, he fought to revive his beloved Memory Grove, riddled with crime, trash and unsavory traffic.

He parlayed that into a seat on the city's Planning Commission. After a nudge from outgoing Democratic House leader Frank Pignanelli, a chair in the Legislature was next.

Becker surprised pundits by besting the former Port O' Call owner in the 1996 race and never has looked back.

"From that point forward, I've been fully engaged," he says.

However, Ralph is the least well-known of the major candidates for Salt Lake City mayor. Can you help? Contact the Ralph Becker campaign to volunteer!
