Why Cranky Naysayers Won't Join Up: Linda Hilton to Talk to Progressives about Building Coalitions

Salt Lake City, Utah -- Last October, State Senator Jay Bell told the Coalition of Religious Communities (CORC) that the ban on the food tax was "dead in the water," but he underestimated, among others, CORC director Linda Hilton and her cadre of advocates. As chief architects and agitators of the legislation, CORC proved Bell wrong when the state legislature rescinded part of the tax earlier this year.

To social justice advocates, like CORC, it was a victory. Now, just in time for Independence Day, Hilton will be addressing Democracy for Utah (D4U), a decidedly more political (though non-partisan) group than CORC but one which shares its progressive values, including responding to poverty. The public is invited to the July 5th Meetup at 7 p.m. at the Salt Lake Main Library, 210 East 400 South, conference room C.

Hilton will address the phenomenon of armchair progressives, independents and moderate Republicans who shy away from joining forces with other like-minded foes of what they perceive to be inadequate and even corrupt current policies. Her topic: "Building a Coalition and Getting Your Issues Embraced."

Democracy for Utah, a grassroots social welfare/political action group, is allied with Democracy for America, the coalition founded by former presidential candidate and current DNC chairman Gov. Howard Dean.
