[From the personal blogs]

The Utah Poverty Partnership Barbecue last evening was a good scene - props to Bill Tibbets and Linda Hilton for a well-organized, well-publicized event. An estimated 150 folks came to meet, greet & eat (vegan & carnivore burgers provided!). They quizzed candidates on their positions on social policies, especially on support for drug and vision benefits for Medicaid beneficiaries.

D4U was there - David, Leon & June got 5 pages of sign-ups and suggestions: "I am so bugged about _____X___ that I want to get active!" Sheryl & John F also attended. We got a nibble from KCPW for some media coverage - how neat is that?!

Candidates in attendance included TWO Republicans: Jay Brummet District 35 and Dirk Anjewierden IV running for Patrice Arent's old Senate seat in Senate District 4. Both are talking moderate positions on social issues - Brummet on support of diversity, need for a living wage, meeting needs of low-income & poor - albeit mostly by "market solutions"; Anjewierden with substantial knowledge of Medicaid & ideas to solve healthcare problems. Democratic candidates included Pete Ashdown (U.S. Senate); Scott McCoy (Utah Senate 2);Chris Johnson (Utah House 25); Roz McGee (Utah House 28); Phil Riesen (Utah House 36); and one more Dem I didn't get to talk to - somebody help me out...

Chris is mad about "47 kids in my daughter's math class" - middle school, boy do I know that's where class sizes blow up in SL City. Roz is aiming to reform the redistricting process, replacing current partisan games with a bipartisan system. Go Roz!

Pete Ashdown will be putting out his solution to the Net Neutrality debate on his blog - watch for it, Larry.

Met several activists and leaders in the UPP group -- especial Thanks to Leon for your introductions.
Good start to our election-year activities...sign up with David for additional tabling events - they're fun, free & nourish political grassroots -

Thank's Owl.

UtahOwl, you are my heroette!
Thanks for all your work.

Listened briefly to Jay Brummett avoid answering Dave's questions about food tax.

Jay stated (paraphrased) that taking away the tax on food will hurt communities as the money from food tax is paying for bonds that the citizens voted for, as well as deplete moneys from other services like low income housing.

I pointed out that low income houseing has matching federal funding.

He continued to assert that taking away $ from communities through ending food tax will hurt.

(I remember Linda telling us up at the Capitol in OZ during the last session that food tax is a tiny insubstantial amount, and that taxes on other commodities such as refrigerators, stoves, swimming pools give us more money- without focusing on the life needs of the poor.)

I also didn't like Jay's assertion that Mark Wheatly is not a leader in the Legislature, and thus he should be voted out? (not sure if I heard that right, correct me if you must.)

BUT, I applaud Jay for showing up. Demonstrtes he is serious about winning this race.
