Proud of President Bush?

Bush's speech to the nation from New Orleans tonight was like nothing he has said before. I have to say, that I liked what I heard, and am holding out hope that we may have a new President. I think that this disaster will focus our nations attention that in a civilization, we have a responsibility for our fellow citizens. Nearly all of my progressive ideals are dependant on that one notion. When the allusion to 9/11 was drawn, my hopes were nearly dashed. But the allusion was to point out that we had not accomplished what needs to be accomplished to secure our citizens in time of need.

Am I skeptical? Yes. It is a dim hope that the president will not return to tax cuts for the wealthy and anti-marriage amendments. That he will return to his attempt to dismantle Social Security Insurance. That he will return his focus to external enemies rather than challenges at home.

It was rather refreshing, however, to feel proud of my President. If it lasts, we all win.

Proud of the President

I would like to say that I would be more proud of being a loyal subject to King George II if he hadn't given so many of the rebuilding contracts to his croneys...and our favorite: Halliburton. Reminds me of someone who appologises by saying "I'm sorry that your feelings were hurt." Y'know, I just don't trust that guy...

...and now Bush claims that no taxes will be raised to fund the rebuilding. The cynical/realist in me says that Bush is thinking "Karl told me the train wreck wouldn't happen for 8 years tops. I thought to myself, hell, I could drive any company into the ground faster than that!"

"Now Watch me Drive!" :(

Proud? Disgusted is more like it.

I was appalled by the speech on Thursday night. It was so disingenuous. He could barely look into the camera. Let's review, no new taxes and no rollbacks of existing tax cuts that only help the wealthy. No rollback of corporate welfare and yet no relief for those wiped out from the new bankruptcy laws that go into effect next month.
How about the allusion that we were "wiped clean"? Is he saying that the Gulf Coast disaster is God's way of getting rid of poor people? Karl Rove is in charge of the building-are you kidding me? What are his qualifications? He may make "Brownie" look competent.
Why is no one talking about the environmental disaster that is NOLA et al? All of that toxic water is being pumped back into Lake Pontchatrain. What is going to be done to clean that up?

The EPA lied about the air quality in lower Manhattan after the towers fell and now 100's of first responders and others who worked in the cleanup effort suffer from horrible health problems. The Gov't claims no responsibility by the way. I understand the desire to get the Gulf Coast up and running again but at what cost to the public health? I'm not holding my breath on all the promises of money from the feds to rebuild NOLA. I may be a cynic, but he promised NYC $85B to rebuild and the city has seen less then $15B and the Feds asked for half of that back. I find references to NYC and Sept 11 offensive. He did nothing during that crisis and got lots of credit I'm not sure why. It's great as a visual but to actually do anything? No, it's not really that important. Remember before his speech he didn't visit with those displaced by the storm, he visited the Chevron Refinerary; that is proof of where his priorities lie, the oil industry and corporate welfare. Those poor disenfranchised folks well they didn't vote for him so he could really care less. 'Cause they are not going to vote for a republican in the next election either.
