What's the difference between school vouchers and welfare?
An article in the Salt Lake Tribune today contains the humorous statement that voucher opponents are "dedicated to depriving parents of their right to make educational choices for their children." Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't every parent already have the right to make educational choices for their children? As a parent, you can choose to send your child to public school, you can choose to send them to private school, or you can choose to home-school them. How are you deprived of your choice?
Oh, that's right — maybe you can't afford to send your kids to private school. So, according to Republicans, the government should give you public tax money to help make up for the fact that you're not earning enough on your own to send your kids to private school. Isn't this what conservatives call "welfare"?
I mean, seriously — how will people ever learn to be self-sufficient and stop depending on the government if we keep giving them handouts?
