Here's your private-school voucher -- now pay the other $12,000 yourself
Lisa Johnson of Utahns for Public Schools points out that poor kids won't benefit from school vouchers (Deseret News):
[V]oucher opponents say private school tuition is expensive and most low-income families would not be able to make up the difference.
"The argument that vouchers are out there to help the poor people is a bit disingenuous because the people who don't need the money are still getting money. The bulk of it will go to those people who can afford to make up the difference in tuition," said Lisa Johnson, spokeswoman for Utahns for Public Schools.
"If it really were to help those disadvantaged kids, they wouldn't be making $500 vouchers available to millionaires," she said.
The Utah Democratic Party website has a graphic showing that a $3,000 voucher would still be $12,040 short of the yearly tuition at Rowland Hall–St. Mark's School. At what income level can you afford either $12,000 or $15,000 to send your kids to private school?
