One of my co-workers, who watched last night's Republican convention against his better judgment, was baffled by the constant jabs at Obama for being a "community organizer." (My co-worker remarked, "Wasn't Jesus Christ sort of a community organizer?") But, as we all know by now, if the Republicans seem inordinately fond of a certain phrase, there's a reason for it. And it won't be a nice reason.
A commenter at Daily Kos has found the explanation, and not surprisingly, it involves Rush Limbaugh:
I had the misfortunate to sit in a cab recently with Rush blaring on radio. I told driver switch the station or lose your tip after hearing Rush going off the wall screetch about community organizer = radicals.
They are reframing community organizing as VERY LEFT WING, filled with -gasp- RADICALS.
It's part of their "Obama's too radically liberal for [the] country" meme.
Billmon adds:
The pieces start to fit together a bit: Rush blasts out the message in its raw form to the true believers, and then they dog whistle back to it at the convention. Classic.
The two theories (race or radicalism?) aren't incompatible, of course: It looks like the game plan is to keep trying to paint Obama as the scary black radical[.]
Update: For the record, Paul Waldman (and others) predicted the GOP's Scary Radical Black Man strategy back in March.
From the Salt Lake County Democrats:
Avoid the lines, any weather we may get, and make sure you vote by signing up to have your ballot mailed to you for FREE! Vote in the comfort of your own home and don't worry about it again. All you have to do is send this form to the County Clerk's office as soon as you can.
Also, if you know anyone who is a voter who sometimes forgets, or sometimes gets too busy — but would vote Democrat if they did — pass this along to them. Make sure they sign up for this program. Their life will be made easier if they do.
The County Party is expending a lot of resources to get people to vote this year. If we can get a large number of people to vote early, that is money saved!
If you live outside Salt Lake County, you can use the Utah form from elections.utah.gov to register to vote by mail.
Speaking of Denver...John Lee asked me last night "Did you cry?"
Yup, I did. And I think there were lots of other peoople in the stadium cried, as well. There were 80,000 of us. Someone had to cry!
Here are the two main feelings that I brought back from the DNC Convention-
The bridges between the racial divide were made stronger.
I looked around the audience full of people cheering, crying, hugging and saying "Amen!"

'Governor Palin delivered her mean-spirited speech quite well last night.
There is so much we still need more details on:'Trooper-gate; she and her husband's involvement with the 'Independence Party'; as Mayor, inappropriate firings (ex.:librarian, because she wouldn't remove books Palin wanted banned). What did she do with the $270 million she kept after 'saying no' to the Bridge to No Where? Using lobbyists to get earmarked money? Being proud that her daughter “made the choice” to keep her baby while trying to take away the ability to chose from every other woman.
